Show Your Love For Your English Springer Spaniel
With many 1st place Westminster Kennel Club Championships for Best in Show, amongst other championship titles held through various Canine Organizations, the English Springer Spaniel is a very well known breed to most. Though the United Kingdom is this dog's country of birth, the English Springer has made its way into the homes and hearts of many throughout the world.
This intelligent, highly active dog can make a great addition to any home. There are known to be good with children, cats and oddly enough, even ferrets. Although, they are known for not getting along well with other canines of the same sex, like all types of animals, they need to be exposed to that type of environment to be able to adapt in a positive way. However, it is not recommended to have the English Springer in a home that has birds. These dog's were bred to be hunting dogs or "Gun Dogs" (since they were used to hunt before the use of firearms), and you would have a higher risk of your Springer to act on its natural hunting instincts when a bird is present.
As with many canine breeds, the English Springer comes in common color combinations of black or liver and white along with some having tan markings. This particular breed also happens to be unique in its own rite, because of the distinctive characteristics and features between English Springer’s that are bred to be "field" dogs and those bred for "show". Both appear to look like two separate breeds, yet when it comes to both field and show Springer’s in a competition, both types are registered under the same breed. The field bred version has more of a rough, shorter coat, a longer tail and less droopy or "pendulum" shaped ears, amongst other features that separate the two. The show version (as shown in the merchandise offered for this breed), have the longer coat and ears, shorter tails and look similar to the traditional Cocker Spaniel.
