German Shorthaired Pointer
This usually solid head colored and spotted body breed hails from its birth country of Germany. Made by crossbreeding the Spanish Pointer with various hound breeds, the German Shorthaired Pointer is one of the most favored canines by active dog owners today. Their color tones and patterns are remarkable, but can cause this Pointer to be disqualified from entering certain events due to certain colors of their coat.
First bred for hunting, these "gun dogs" are a very smart and loving breed. For some time, these dogs were stereotyped as aggressive towards mainly humans, fearless, some were thought to be shy, all of which are fallacies. Although due to the German Pointer's hunting nature, having cats and other small animals in the home can tend to be difficult if introduced to the home after the dog is an adult as it is a breed that is always on alert. If raised with other animals from a young age however, it usually melds just fine.
The average adult German Pointer usually weighs anywhere between 45 to about 70 pounds and is a highly active breed. Therefore, the ability to give your loyal friend their daily needed exercise and activities to help maintain their positive demeanor and for their health and endurance, are a necessity when owning this dog.
