If you have ever owned an Irish Setter, or perhaps it is more appropriate to say if an Irish Setter has ever owned you, then you already know how amazing these animals are. Even if you have never owned one it’s a good bet that you have seen one and thought “what a beautiful dog”. Rest assured you are not alone in that thought.
Obviously one of the first things you notice about an Irish Setter is its flowing silky red coat. Look a little closer and you will notice the soft expression and regal bearing this dog possesses. However, this breeds virtues go much deeper than its appearance.
Its temperament is best described as playful, affectionate and fun loving. If you check the American Kennel Club’s breed standard, they list the Irish Setters personality as “frolicking”. Anyone who has ever been around an Irish Setter puppy knows that this is a great description as they are slow to maturity both physically and mentally. Reminiscent of a child, they are often called mischievous, independent, intelligent and anxious to please.
Originally trained to hunt birds, its perfectly still and quiet high-tailed lofty point stance is unmistakable. The Irish Setter has a strong hunting instinct and is an extremely reliable companion while in the field.
But, again, if you are at all familiar with this breed, then you know all of this first hand.
