Weimaraner Wisdom
Perhaps you were taking a walk in the park or looking through a pet shop window and this dog with a sleek gray coat and aristocratic features caught your eye. Or it might have been at a dog show where one dog seemed to stand-out, showing both grace and alertness. This, of course, would have to be a Weimaraner and you later learned that along with all of its other great traits it is also known for its speed and endurance.
Partially due to this stamina and speed the Weimaraner, a pointer by nature is also known to be a great hunting dog. At one time these dogs were originally used to track and bring down big game. As big game hunting fell off and became scarcer they were trained to hunt smaller game and upland birds. They are also known to be fine water retrievers; however, some of them need to be taught to swim, unlike other breeds where it appears to be just instinct. In England and Germany the Weimaraner is used as a police dog and they are exceptionally adept at search and rescue due to their agility.
The breeds standard describes the Weimaraner as friendly, alert, fearless and obedient. However, if you own one you know that is only a part of their personality. In that case descriptive words such as headstrong, loyal, bold and assertive come to mind. As puppies they can be difficult to housebreak and just might have a small destructive chewing habit that can be tough to break.
But, once you get all of that worked out and your Weimaraner also decides that you are a keeper, you will be loyal friends. Consider showing that loyalty by wearing a sweatshirt proudly proclaiming “And on the 6th day, God created the Weimaraner and God saw that it was good”. Or perhaps one with “Owned by a Weimaraner” across the front. (By the way that one is a personal favorite among Weimaraners).
So, go ahead, show the world that you are owned by a Weimaraner and are proud of it.
